Why Moving From After Effects to PowerPoint Is Harder Than It Looks

A rendered video dropped into a slide is not the same as a presentation that a presenter can navigate. The first thing to understand is that a faithful After Effects to PowerPoint conversion is not a simple export. After Effects has no native export path to .pptx. To replicate an After Effects ease-out curve, the closest PowerPoint equivalent is the "Decelerate" timing option under Effect Options — it is not identical to a custom Bezier, but for most diagram reveals it reads as intentional rather than mechanical.
For interactive diagrams — where a presenter clicks to reveal the next layer of a process diagram — PowerPoint's trigger system is the right tool. Setting an animation trigger to "On Click of [specific shape]" means each diagram element reveals only when its corresponding button or node is clicked, not automatically. A five-stage process diagram, for example, would have five trigger groups, each containing the shape reveal and its associated label animation, sequenced so that clicking Stage 2 reveals only Stage 2's content without jumping ahead.
Hyperlink-based navigation — jumping from a summary diagram slide to a deep-dive section and back — is handled through Insert > Link > Place in This Document. This is how branching presentations are built without video or JavaScript. A well-structured interactive deck of this kind typically uses a master navigation slide and 3–5 section anchors, with each diagram slide linked back to the master.
Manage File Size Deliberately
A converted deck with rich visuals can easily balloon to 80–150 MB if assets are not compressed. PowerPoint's built-in image compression tool (File > Compress Media / Compress Pictures) should be applied at the 150 ppi setting for screen-only decks. Embedded video clips — if any AE sequences are converted to video and embedded — should be H.264 encoded at 1080p before import, not after, since PowerPoint's internal compression on video is lossy and unpredictable.
What Goes Wrong When This Work Is Rushed
The most common failure mode is skipping the composition audit and going straight to reconstruction from memory or a screen recording. Without a timing sheet, animation delays drift — an element that was supposed to appear at 1.2 seconds ends up at 1.8 seconds, and across 15 slides those small discrepancies make the presentation feel sloppy even if no one can name exactly why.
A second frequent problem is treating rasterized exports as acceptable substitutes for vector assets.
