Structuring the Slide Master and Layouts
The Slide Master is where the template either holds together or falls apart. A properly built master contains the brand colors, the embedded fonts, and the background treatment — nothing else. The twelve or so Layout slides beneath it carry the actual structural variations: title slide, section opener, content-left image-right, full-bleed image, data slide, and so on.
Each layout should have placeholder boxes — Title, Content, Picture — positioned on a consistent grid. A 12-column grid with 40px outer margins and 20px gutters, translated into PowerPoint's ruler and guides system, gives every layout a shared spatial logic. When a designer drops content into any layout, text blocks and image zones automatically align because they were all built to the same underlying grid, not eyeballed independently.
File naming matters here too. Layout names inside the Slide Master panel should be descriptive — "Section Opener," "Two-Column Data," "Full Bleed Image" — rather than the default "Layout 1, Layout 2" numbering. What Goes Wrong When This Work Is Rushed
The most common failure mode is treating the PDF as the final source instead of returning to the original Illustrator file. A second recurring problem is skipping the Slide Master entirely and building templates as flat slide files.
