The back label follows similar principles but shifts priority toward compliance. The ingredient list, producer address, and any required regulatory statements are not optional. A good approach is to set the mandatory text first, confirm it fits at 7pt minimum in the chosen typeface, and then design the remaining back label space around what is left.
What Goes Wrong When This Work Is Rushed
The most common failure on projects like this is treating the logo as finished before it has been tested at actual production sizes. A mark that looks resolved at 500px in Illustrator can fall apart at the 0.75-inch cap emboss size — thin strokes disappear, enclosed counters fill in, and the mark becomes an unreadable shape. Every logo element should be tested at its three smallest real-world use sizes before the design is approved.
Color inconsistency across SKUs is another predictable problem. Without a locked Pantone or CMYK specification for each brand color, two labels printed six months apart at different quantities often come back visually different — the "warm amber" on the aromatic label looks orange next to the "warm amber" on the citrus label. Specifying Pantone Matching System (PMS) values in the brand guidelines eliminates this drift entirely.
Font licensing is an issue that surfaces late and expensively. A typeface that looks perfect in the design mockup may carry a commercial print license fee that was not budgeted. Confirming print and digital licensing for every typeface in the system before committing to it is not optional on a commercial packaging project.
Skipping the dieline is a fourth common misstep. A dieline is the exact cutting template provided by the label printer, showing the label shape, bleed zone, and safe area for text and key design elements. Designing without the actual dieline from the chosen printer means the artwork may not fit the physical bottle correctly — label edges land in the wrong place, critical text falls outside the safe zone, and the whole project requires a costly redesign round.
Finally, treating the digital mockup as the final proof without ordering a physical press proof is a mistake that catches people by surprise. Metallic inks, matte laminate, and textured paper stocks all render differently on screen than in hand. A press proof at the final quantity run costs a small fraction of a full reprint.
