Typography and Legibility
Historical war maps live or die on their typography. The hierarchy follows a clear three-level structure: major geographic features and theater names at 14–18pt small caps, town and city names at 9–11pt regular weight, and unit labels or annotations at 7–8pt italic. Any smaller than 7pt and the label becomes unreadable at standard print sizes (8.5 x 11 or A4).
For digital delivery, all text should be checked at 100% zoom at 1200px wide — the typical editorial display width — to confirm no label is obscured by a movement arrow or bleeds into a water feature.
Common Pitfalls That Compromise the Work
The single most damaging mistake is treating research as a quick step rather than the foundation. Designers who move into Adobe Illustrator after an hour of Wikipedia browsing produce maps that look competent but contain errors that will be caught by any knowledgeable reader. The research phase on a serious historical map takes longer than the drawing phase on most projects.
A second common failure is ignoring the distinction between period geography and modern geography. Pulling a contemporary country boundary file from a GIS database and applying it to a 1914 map, for instance, produces anachronistic borders that are historically incorrect — and obviously so to the target audience.
Scale inconsistency is another trap. When a project involves a series of related maps — say, five battle maps from a single campaign — the scale and projection must be consistent across all of them so spatial comparisons between maps are valid. Varying the scale inadvertently between maps in a series is a quality failure that often only becomes visible when the maps are placed side by side.
Poor legend design undermines even technically accurate maps. The legend is not an afterthought — every symbol, color, and line style used on the map face must appear in the legend, and the legend must be tested against the actual map elements to confirm nothing was added during revision that was not documented.
Finally, export settings matter more than most designers account for. For print, historical maps should export at a minimum of 300 DPI as a CMYK PDF, with all fonts outlined and all linked assets embedded.
