The Research Challenge
When a startup in the online retail space needed to build a sourcing strategy from the ground up, they faced a problem that's common in early-stage e-commerce: too much data, too little direction. Amazon's wholesale marketplace spans thousands of product categories, and without a structured methodology, identifying genuine opportunity from surface-level trends is difficult.
Their internal team was capable but stretched. They needed a focused research effort that would produce actionable outcomes — not just a data dump.
How We Approached It
Helion360 started by defining the research scope across several wholesale-viable categories. Rather than casting a wide net, we applied filtering criteria early — focusing on products with consistent demand signals, manageable competition density, and viable wholesale margins.
We analyzed competitor listings to understand pricing patterns and identify gaps where demand was present but established sellers were not fully meeting it. Seasonal trend data was layered in to flag categories where timing would affect sourcing decisions. Every product opportunity was evaluated against the same structured criteria before being included in the output.
The final deliverable was a market research presentation design with each category ranked by opportunity score and supported by competitive pricing context. We also incorporated a pricing strategy framework the client could apply directly when approaching suppliers.
What the Research Produced
The report gave the client a prioritized view of the Amazon wholesale landscape — organized by entry readiness rather than alphabetical category lists or raw volume numbers. Two product categories were flagged as immediate-entry opportunities based on demand consistency and competition profile.
The client's sourcing team was able to move into supplier conversations within weeks of receiving the report, using the pricing benchmarks we established as a negotiation reference. A second tier of categories was documented for future monitoring as their inventory capacity grew.
